German Lesson: Untergang

The recent posts "Bunker Bingo" and "Here's to Efficient Packing!"
suggest a review.

Alex Ross in The New Yorker  on Dec. 2, 2020, on the German
word "Untergang " —

"The usual translation is 'downfall,' although
the various implications of the word—
literally, “going-under”—are difficult to capture
in English. In some contexts, Untergang  simply
means descent: a sunset is a Sonnenuntergang .

Dead Poet Joke

From the subtitles of the recent Kristen Stewart film “Underwater” —

427
00:30:26,144 –> 00:30:27,476
He’d always say
he had a new joke,

428
00:30:27,478 –> 00:30:29,445
and then he’d tell
the same stupid joke.

429
00:30:29,447 –> 00:30:32,785
I was… laughing at that joke.

430
00:30:34,053 –> 00:30:35,685
Yeah, what was it?

431
00:30:35,687 –> 00:30:38,654
What did the fish say when
it bumped into the brick wall?

April 11 was the dies natalis , in the Catholic sense, of John Horton Conway.

“At night, over Rothko Chapel’s reflecting pond, ‘Broken Obelisk’
looks particularly dramatic.

The great American sculptor Barnett Newman once said his
monumental sculpture ‘Broken Obelisk’ was intended to transform
ideas about life and tragedy into a glimpse of the ‘sublime.’ ”

“… you don’t write off an aging loved one
just because he or she becomes cranky.”

issue dated December 19 & 26, 2016, page 27

He was cranky in his forties too —
