Thomas Mann on "the mystery of the unity" —

scheinbar Objectiven und Akzidentellen als
Veranstaltung der Seele glaube ich den innersten Kern

An Einheit-Geheimnis that is perhaps* more closely related
to pure mathematics** —
"What is the nature of the original unity
that throws itself apart in this separation,
and in what sense are the separated ones
here as the essence of the abyss?
Here it cannot be a question of any kind of 'dialectic,'
but only of the essence of the ground
