From this journal on the above date — April 13, 2014 (Gray Space) —

Review of Seeing Gray , a book by pastor Adam Hamilton
of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection
in Leawood, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City—

“Adam Hamilton invites us to soulful gray space
between polarities, glorious gray space that is holy,
mysterious, complex, and true. Let us find within
our spirits the courage and humility to live and learn
in this faithful space, to see gray, to discern a more
excellent way.”

  • In the Robert Frost poem, "The Witch of Coos," the game
    is referenced in lines 7-8:
    "Summoning spirits isn't 'Button, button,
    who's got the button,' I would have them know."

Fact check:  From the Frost poem at Bartleby.com

  • "Summoning spirits isn’t 'Button, button,

Class of 64 continues…

Uncategorized — m759 @ 12:00 PM

Mathematician Norbert Wiener reportedly
died on this date in 1964.

“Mathematics is too arduous and uninviting a field
to appeal to those to whom it does not give great rewards.
These rewards are of exactly the same character as
those of the artist. To see a difficult uncompromising material
take living shape and meaning is to be Pygmalion,
whether the material is stone or hard, stonelike logic."

it brings to mind another Southwestern classic

A passage suggested by the 2006 Oxford University Press title
The Architecture of Modern Mathematics , edited by
José Ferreirós and Jeremy Gray —

Jeremy Gray, Plato's Ghost: The Modernist Transformation of Mathematics ,
Princeton, 2008 —

"Here, modernism is defined as an autonomous body of ideas,
having little or no outward reference, placing considerable emphasis
on formal aspects of the work and maintaining a complicated—
ndeed, anxious— rather than a naïve relationship with the day-to-day
world, which is the de facto view of a coherent group of people,
such as a professional or discipline-based group that has a high sense
of the seriousness and value of what it is trying to achieve.
This brisk definition…."

William Butler Yeats —

“Poets and Wits about him drew;
‘What then?’ sang Plato’s ghost.
   ‘What then?’

‘The work is done,’
   grown old he thought,
‘According to my boyish plan;
Let the fools rage,
   I swerved in naught,
Something to perfection brought’;
But louder sang that ghost,
   ‘What then?’
