"The way I work is that
I focus entirely on a small thing
and try to milk that for all it's worth,
to find everything in it
that makes musical sense."

Death in Mathmagic Land

"It was our old friend Pythagoras who discovered
that the pentagram was full of mathematics."

— Narrator, "Donald in Mathmagic Land," Disney, 1959

… and it was Peter J. Cameron who discovered that
mathematics was full of pentagrams.

A Wilderness of Mirrors

A link to a Nov. 22 post on Arcade Fire was added today
to yesterday's "Dating an OS" post.

That Nov. 22 post suggests a review related to a new film —

"If the spy wars of the later 20th century were fought
in 'a wilderness of mirrors,' beset by paradox and
moral uncertainty— evil done in the name of good—
then John le Carré, or, rather, the narrative voice that
went by the name John le Carré, was the perfect
choice to polish those mirrors. It was the voice of the
urbane, upper-class Englishman: courteous, opaque
and chilly, with a ruthless, penetrative intellect and
razor wit for the delivery of its insights."

Good Question

Amy Adams in the new film “Her” —

“You’re dating an OS?  What is that like?”

— Question quoted in a Hollywood Reporter
story on the film’s second trailer

From the same story, by Philiana Ng —

” The trailer is set to Arcade Fire’s
mid-tempo ballad ‘Supersymmetry.’ “

Fiction

From David Lavery's weblog today—

IMAGE- '...final belief must be in a fiction.'- Wallace Stevens

It is?  Then a check of the rest of the poem seems in order.

In the poem, Stevens speaks of

The impossible possible philosophers' man,
The man who has had the time to think enough,
The central man, the human globe, responsive
As a mirror with a voice, the man of glass,
Who in a million diamonds sums us up.

Compare and contrast with a rather silly recent music video—

Perhaps Stevens's "human globe" could be portrayed by the
versatile Philip Seymour Hoffman, who stars in a new film directed
by Anton Corbijn, the perpetrator of the above Arcade Fire video.
