automorphism group, which is said to be of order 40,320 = 8!.

The isomorphism of  Gl (4, 2) and A₈ may, perhaps, be viewed via group actions
on two 4×4 arrays, one containing Curtis octads , the other Eddington pentads.

Exercise:  Let the same Gl (4, 2) permutations act on both arrays. If  there were some
natural correspondence between sets of the permuted pentads  and the 35 partitions of a
smaller, 2-column 4-row array into two 4-sets, it might reflect the structure of the
Curtis Miracle Octad Generator (the MOG), in which there is such a correspondence
between sets of octads  and partitions — one that is not, to the casual observer,
particularly natural. In such a reflection of structure, sets of the permuted pentads 
would have to correspond somehow to 4+4 partitions of an 8-set. The role played by A₈ 
might or might not then become more apparent in the interplay between pentad-sets and
8-set partitions.
